University Museum
The University Museum opened its doors in 1996 and was the first museum ever to be established on a university campus in Japan. It houses more than half of the university’s entire collection of over 6 million items of scholarly interest. Besides providing crucial support to researchers in the gathering and preservation of specimens, it is also involved in educational activities and holds exhibitions open to the general public. Nearly 70 such exhibitions have so far taken place. The museum is also engaged in experimental outreach work, such as the development of a “mobile museum” bringing exhibits out into a wider urban space.
