General Library
In 1928, the university received a great act of generosity when its library was rebuilt thanks to donations from the Rockefeller Foundation. In the Great Tokyo Earthquake of 1923, the previously existing library and most of its books had been destroyed. Donations of books for the new library were sent in by numerous donors both within Japan and abroad. The design of the building is notable for its façade resembling a row of books and for the impressive staircase rising up into the interior like the steps of a Roman basilica. This is yet another masterpiece in the illustrious oeuvre of Yoshikazu Uchida.
