Sanshiro Pond
This pond was created in 1638 and was part of the landscaping of the Edo residence of the Kaga-han (which formerly stood on the site of the present campus). It was subsequently enlarged and became famous as the largest pond of all the aristocratic residences in the city of Edo. Its official name, Yutokuen Kokoroji Ike, was derived from the fact that its shape resembles that of the character for “Heart” (Kokoro). However, it is now popularly known as “Sanshiro” following its depiction in the novel of that name by Natsume Soseki.
